A laboratory-grown diamond has the same essential crystal structure and chemical composition as a natural diamond. Its origin is different and can be identified through specialist testing.
Chemical Vapour Deposition
In CVD growth, a diamond seed is placed inside a chamber containing carbon-bearing gas. Activated carbon accumulates on the seed as diamond. After growth, the rough material is assessed, cut and polished.
High Pressure, High Temperature
HPHT uses a specialised press, a carbon source and a diamond seed. Carefully controlled heat and pressure allow diamond crystal growth. The resulting rough is then prepared for cutting and finishing.
Choosing your diamond
Compare the grading report, dimensions and appearance. Ask whether any post-growth treatment is disclosed. Environmental impacts depend on how a producer operates and sources energy; laboratory origin alone does not establish a sustainability claim.
